The Art of the Capsize

The Art of the Capsize

Feeling comfortable in and around your kayak is a key part of building confidence on the water. This focused, hands-on clinic is designed to help you develop calm, effective responses in the event of an unplanned capsize while using a sprayskirt.

The primary focus is on wet exits, with repeated practice in a controlled environment so you can become familiar and relaxed with the experience of being upside down and safely exiting your kayak. The goal is to build confidence through repetition so your response becomes smooth and instinctive.

We’ll also introduce a brief overview of assisted re-entries—helping a paddler back into their kayak (or receiving assistance yourself)—to round out the experience and keep the session flowing efficiently. While an important skill, this clinic is intentionally weighted toward developing strong wet exit competency.

More advanced rescue techniques, including detailed assisted and solo re-entries, are covered in our Foundations of Rescue clinic.
